The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism organized the Donghak Peasant Revolution Day Selection Committee in February 2018 to promote the establishment of anniversaries for re-illuminating the historical value and meaning of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, as well as raising the spirit of patriotism.

The anniversary of the Revolution was recommended by regional and basic local governments across the country, and a public hearing was held for the people. Finally, May 11, which was when the Donghak Peasant Army won the first battle with the government forces in the Battle of Hwangtohyeon, was selected as the anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
